Panama Wrap-Up

Thursday night was wonderful - full of laughter, conversations, and love.

Friday morning we all gathered once again at the church, very similarly to our first nervous meeting at the beginning of the week. This time, we stood with our host families. Each family was presented with a certificate and a gift from the students they housed. We then organized any clothes or items we wanted to donate to the school. All of us left our awesome rubber boots - we just didn't have room!

Amid many tears and hugs, we said our farewells, snapped a gazillion last pictures, crammed onto the chivas (again, with elbows, legs, and arms sticking out everywhere), forded the river, and said goodbye to San Miguel Centro.

I'm a little fuzzy about all the details, but we drove to...Panama City? Wherever we were flying out of. We got to our hotel, Kimber and Joel went in, annnnnddd...the hotel didn't have our reservations.

Therefore, we embarked upon an exciting adventure to find a new hotel for 16 people! All in all, it ended up fine - we had barely enough time to shower before we went out for the night!

We had a nice dinner with traditional Panamanian dancing (but different than the special San Miguel Cumbia dance) and delicious food. PLUS dessert. :)

From there, we headed to an 80's country-western bar. Not even kidding. It was fabulous. We couldn't sit down unless we ordered something, and no one wanted food after that dinner, so we awkwardly danced - and at the time, there was no one else there. Not to mention the 80's country music videos playing on a screen. Just bizarre. Eventually, Kimber and Katie got us all waters so we could sit (ha!) and we saw something amazingly interesting characters.

1) Several mullets.
2) The tightest leopard print leggings I've ever seen, complete with very large hair.
3) "Bill" - who asked us if we were from a convent. Thankfully, Sam went into protective mode and forced them to talk to him and not us. Go Sam!
4) I don't even know.

Eventually, Kimber and Joel went to scope out some other places, and we ended up going across the street to a place with strobe lights, lasers, and all sorts of exciting things.

Picture us - a group of 10 girls and 3 guys (Lynn and Kelly had gone back to the hotel), dressed in flowy skirts, tank tops, and Chacos. Minimal clean up, due to the fact that we packed for a service trip for 6 days in a rainforest. Compared to the people inside, we looked pretty stupid. Haha! We got in though, don't remember if just the boys had to pay or if we did too. They originally tried to charge us more than everyone else, but somehow we got out of that.

We had a good time! We bet Sam that he wouldn't get on the stage, and as soon as he hopped up, these HUGE burly bouncers started moving his way - he got down pretty fast. We just danced (I just wanna dance!) and headed back to the hotel.

Flew home the next day, had an adventure finding food on the way back to Boone.

Good times.

The End.
